All About Pinterest #CollegeCash Summary
On this week’s #CollegeCash chat, Jodi welcomed Kelly Lieberman (@tribe2point0), a blogger for #12Most and the host of her own chat (#PinChat). Kelly is a social media manager who helps businesses become social on the inside and the outside. Her #PinChat is a weekly chat held Fridays at 10PM ET to teach businesses how brands, non-profits and individuals are using Pinterest.
Pinterest: Getting Started
To get started on Pinterest, you can simply request an invitation to join at http://pinterest.com/landing/. To jumpstart the process, ask someone who is currently using Pinterest to invite you. Next, you’ll want to set up your boards, which is a set of pins created about a particular topic. Users can have as many boards and pins as they want. (Note: Kelly’s

Pinterest: What and Why?
Pinterest was designed to be a place where users can easily collect, catalog, and share their interests. It gives you a forum to focus on your aspirations, and connect the past, present and future. By using the “pin it” button, you can easily bookmark anything you find interesting on the web. You can get the Pin Bookmarklet by visiting http://pinterest.com/about/goodies/ and you can also add a “pin it” button to your website for products/blog posts.
How Educators are Using Pinterest
Educators have found Pinterest to be particularly successful in showcasing their curator design ideas. It’s also proven to be a fantastic tool for the collaboration for class projects. Teachers can pin with their students by visiting http://on.mash.to/HsUqgf. Educators can find more great ideas at: http://to.pbs.org/GYO9Lm.
College Life: Connect with Pinterest
A great example of a board idea about dorm life can be found at @UWAthetics http://bit.ly/HoiTFe. Students can set up a collaborative board to learn what they need for their dorm. There are also school pride boards (colors, mascots, etc.) and a host of study tools/apps.
Pinterest allows users to express themselves – on their boards – far beyond what other platforms offer. It’s a mosaic that reflects what you are truly interested in such as cooking, coffee, social media, etc. There’s something for everyone.
Sharing Your Pinterest Board
You can share your boards on Twitter, Facebook or embed them in your blog. You can also @mention others, thereby increasing your presence and theirs. Business owners have found it very useful in increasing awareness about their products/services.
More About #PinChat
#PinChat was born out of Kelly’s obsession/passion for Pinterest. Her Friday chats feature guests discussing how they are using Pinterest for copyrighting, TOS, etiquette and a host of other topics. Last week’s guest was @Chobani.
Understanding the Repin
A repin is when you see something that someone else has pinned that you would like to add to one of your boards. Simply select “repin” on the image(s) you like and select the board you want to pin it to. You can then change the image description – or leave it as is – before hitting “pin it.”
Pinterest for Entrepreneurs
Pinterest is a great tool for entrepreneurs to express their voice and showcase their interests. Categories are just prompts, so be creative and genuine. If you are not sure if a category is right for you, conduct a search in your industry or field of expertise. You may find that you’ve already been pinned; to find out, go to: http://pinterest.com/source/URL (no www).
Celebrate Your Children with Pinterest
There are a lot of amazing ideas of this topic! You can highlight where you have lived in the past and places you’ve visited. You can collect crafts, recipes, inspirational quotes and just about anything else that interests you.
Why All the Hype?
Pinterest has grown rapidly due in part to its ease of use. It provides users with a quiet environment to dream, discover and to be inspired. It’s a positive experience that battles the social fatigue created by other platforms.
